Making a day of the lighthouse

The Point, the rocks, and why the whole end of the island feels like the edge of something.

Making a day of the lighthouse

You can see the lighthouse in ten minutes. That is not the same as making a day of it.

Come early. The light on the bluff before the lot fills is the reason people keep photographing a building that has been photographed a million times.

The rocks below the Point are a place to be careful, not casual. Footing is uneven, the water arrives faster than it looks, and the surfcasters standing there have usually done it a hundred times before.

Bring a jacket regardless of the forecast in town. The Point makes its own weather, and it is always a few degrees more serious than Main Street.

Then go back toward the harbor, eat something, and let the afternoon happen. That is the whole assignment.
