What to bring on a Montauk party boat

A short, unglamorous packing list from people who have forgotten all of it at least once.

What to bring on a Montauk party boat

A party boat is a public sidewalk that happens to be floating. You will stand for hours, the deck will be wet, and the wind will be about fifteen degrees colder than the parking lot suggested.

Bring layers you can shed, a rain shell even on a clear morning, and shoes with real grip. Cotton is the wrong answer for all of it.

Bring more water and more food than feels necessary. Bring cash for the crew. Bring a small bag you can stow under the rail, not a suitcase.

If you take anything for motion sickness, take it before you leave the dock. On the water is too late, and the rail is a poor place to learn that.

Everything else — rods, rigs, bait — the boat will sort out. The parts you have to get right are the parts that keep you comfortable enough to stay out there.
