Reel basics, without the catalog

Drag, line, and the two or three decisions that actually matter for a first outfit.

Reel basics, without the catalog

Most beginner gear anxiety is a marketing problem. There are only a few decisions in front of you, and the rest is preference.

Drag is the one to understand. It is the reel letting line go under load so the line does not break instead. Set it before you need it, not while a fish is running.

Line choice is about stretch and visibility. Heavier is not automatically better; heavier line casts worse and tangles more.

Rinse everything in fresh water when you get home. Salt is patient, and it will find whatever you did not rinse.

Before you spend real money, go out once on a boat that supplies tackle. You will learn more in four hours than in four weeks of reading.
